Additive Manufacturing as Global Manufacturing Trend

Machinery Assembly

Additive manufacturing or AM represents a new breakthrough in the manufacturing industry. Most people are already familiar with Additive manufacture as 3D printing. This is a transformative approach to industrial manufacturing  that allows for the production of lighter and stronger parts and systems. AM can offer digital flexibility and efficiency in manufacturing that traditional manufacturers generally are unable to achieve.

Technology created the path for smarter factories and supply chains, but what didn’t change is the need to print, grind, bend and stamp raw materials. This manufacturing process not only requires expensive assembly of multiple parts and specialized tooling, but also restricts design freedom and generates a lot of waste.

The additive manufacturing process requires computer-aided-design (CAD) software or 3D object scanners to instruct the hardware to apply the material layer by layer in precise geometric shapes to create an object, while traditional manufacturing often requires material to be removed by milling, machining, carving, molding or other means to shape the final product.

A survey of 700 US manufacturing professionals by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in April 2020 (Barclays Corporate and Investment), 25% of respondents said they need to change their supply chain in response to the pandemic, seven industries also ranked AM as one of the three technologies COVID said should be prioritized for investment.

They also ranked AM as a top technology priority for post-pandemic investment in the following sectors:

  • Aircraft/Aerospace, Electronics/Computers, and Medical/Surgical/Dental in first place.
  • Automotive and consumer products in second place
  • And last on the additive manufacturing priority list are defense and industrial/commercial manufacturing.

Transport of a Complete Refinery from Switzerland to Antwerp Port by 7WL

Relocation Project in another dimension

Since 5 weeks already now 7WL has started the operation to move a complete refinery from Switzerland to Antwerp Port which does involve around 30-40 FCL loadings as well as around 10-20 OOG loadings per week.  In order to establish a competitive set up – pricewise and operational  – 7 WL is using the complete range of freight forwarding.

The positioning as well as full pick up of the FCL part is being done by a mix of barge, rail as well as truck involvements – depending on actual needs and options. And same goes for the OOG part of this project – depending on the loads per week we check for the best suitable way to move the cargo to Antwerp port area – by direct trucks or alternatively of course by barge combinations.

7WL is on site during the complete project duration – supervising the logistic operations, discussing on different scenarios and options and last but not least of course as troubleshooter if needed.

Together with our partners and subcontractors we look forward to an exciting time. And of course: We will send regular updates.

Planning and project management.

The project was thoroughly analyzed in terms of relevant technical and organizational settings. A detailed schedule was created, as well as a risk management assessment. Start dismantling the production sauces line which includes oversized tanks using our 50 tons crane.

Loading and transport:

Loading and transport was the final part of the dismantling process and the penultimate phase of relocation services. Loading the production sauces line and labelled its mechanical/electrical components onto the trucks.

Re-assembly is the most work and time-consuming stage, as it takes about 70% of the total project duration. Coordinating tanks unloading to the new production facility layout.

Unloading, moving, and final positioning the AC units in accordance with the new layout design. The final position of the AC units was on top of the building.

Planning, preparing and moving, using specialized equipment, the production equipment into the new production area.

Handling the spare parts of the production line, positioning it according with the new layout.

Recommissioning, checking, routing and connecting all the necessary electric equipment.

Preparing the new layout to sustain all the utilities and connecting all the necessary electric equipment.

Reconfiguring the design of metallic structure by welding it in accordance with the new layout of the sauces tanks.
